Photographs of the War of Independence from Imperial War Museum © IWM The Excel also hosted a permanent exhibition of photographs of the War of Independence from the Imperial War Museum , taken by British War Photographers in 2019. The Imperial War Museums has over 600 photographs most of which feature the activities of the British security and military personnel including the various Regiments of the British Army, the Royal Irish Constabulary & Royal Irish Constabulary Special Reserve or Black and Tans, and the Auxiliaries in various locations around Ireland between 1919 and 1921. In addition there are a smaller number of images that depict members of the Irish Volunteers – usually during and after round ups by the British forces. Other images are remarkable for the how they represent the rural nature of the conflict and how it was knitted into the fabric of the landscape and everyday life. The Excel has selected 17 images from this collection that illustrates this form of ‘guerrilla’ warfare that saw the Irish Volunteers dismantle and disable the considerably larger, more heavily armed and professional British Military Forces using ambush, underground networks and intelligence. Excel Annual Heritage Festival The Excel also hosts an annual Heritage Festival that look at the history of the town from an urban, industrial, architectural, cultural and social perspective since the early 20th century. The Festival runs over two days in early Autumn and include a range of events that explore and reflect on this legacy. |
