About the family research centre

OUR MISSION

The Tipperary Family History Research facility (TFHR) was established to provide a research service to those people who have Tipperary ancestry, enabling you to have your ancestors records found and increase your knowledge of your family history. We hope you'll find our services and this website useful to you in your research and look forward to working on your behalf.

Tipperary Excel Heritage Co. Ltd administers the records on behalf of the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly and is a non-profit-making organisation and a registered charity.

Tipperary Family History Research is the only facility to offer a research service based on access to the Baptismal and Marriage records of the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Cashel & Emly. The Archdiocese covers most of County Tipperary and part of County Limerick and it contains 46 Parishes (map).

On this site you will find advice on research within the Archdiocese and Tipperary in general, contact information, useful links to other resources, maps relevant to your research, details of our services and the associated costs and the opportunity to commission research directly by completing a research request form.

We are also pleased to offer access to Memorial Records for World War I and can provide a search facility of this database. We can offer details on the regiment, rank, place and date of death of Irish Service Men and Women who fought and died in this war. To request a search, please telephone ++353 (0) 62 80555 or 80520

A GUIDE TO TRACING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY
  • Try to get as much concrete information down on paper as possible, e.g. the Christian name and the surname of the person you are trying to trace and their issue (sons & daughters).
  • List all siblings (brothers & sisters) if possible, together with the Christian name of the father, the mothers maiden name and Christian name and any known aunts and uncles.
  • Talk to old relatives, if possible, and find out where the family homestead was located if you don't already know. The name of the parish would help a great deal or indeed the townland, taking into consideration that one already knows the county involved.
  • A death certificate or a marriage certificate can often provide relevant information and we at Tipperary Family History Research depend on this source quite a bit if the enquirer has fairly sketchy information.
  • Grave stones can be another source of information as can newspaper clippings, family bibles, census returns and shipping records.
  • If the person you are trying to trace married in Ireland please give the brides maiden name and the names of their children whether born in Ireland or not. Remember the first son was usually named after the paternal grandfather. Remember also that a marriage record is usually found in the parish that the bride was born in or lived in.
Finally, if in doubt, contact Tipperary Family History Research for advice.

Tipperary Town Walks

The Excel is a Fáilte Ireland Tourism information point and there is a wealth of published information about the history and architecture of the town available at the desk in reception. During the summer months the Excel offers Guided Walking Tours with Mary Alice O'Conner who will bring participants on a facinating journey around key town landmarks and points of interest. For further information on these tours contact the Box Office/Reception 353 (0)62 80520.
