THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER – DOUBLE BILL
Animale Francesca Foscarini Associazione Culturale VAN in collaboration with 18M8L TICKETING Excel Arts Centre 19:30 (double bill) €15 (double bill) Inspired by the painter Antonio Ligabue and his visions of the natural world, Animale brings to the stage a frightfully indifferent nature. Inspired by the painter Antonio Ligabue and his extraordinary visions of the natural world, Animale brings to the stage, in the words of John Berger, a frightfully indifferent nature, made of energy and combat, that exists without promising anything, where life’s first basic need is shelter; its first prayer, an appeal for protection; its first sign of life, pain. It is in this desolate context that we find beauty; a sudden, unpredictable discovery. It won't be like this forever is a thirty-minute solo full of self-reflective and ironic references that defy any definition. Choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak carries a placard across the stage that states “It won't be like this forever”, while dancer Daniel Conant performs a Schuhplattler for an audience that is safely seated following COVID-19 guidelines. TANZANWEISUNGEN (dance instructions) is a thirty-minute solo full of self-reflective and ironic references that defy any definition. Ostruschnjak remains true to the eclectic style of his latest productions and allows the soloist to transition effortlessly from a Schuhplattler to a grand jeté, from boxing footwork to break dance moves, and from a référence to the jump rope; the common element is the sound, the pounding, clapping, breathing, jumping, bouncing that fills the space as a consistent rhythm. As if he had been wound up, the protagonist tirelessly works his way through the extremely diverse canon of movement in rapid succession, adopting poses of resistance, combat and victory, stylized masculinity, youth culture, classic ballet, ballroom dancing and sports; an absurd sequence of divergent elements that overdraw, ironize and contradict each other and that combined playfully, yet relentlessly, lead into an abyss. Accordingly, the piece ends with DAF’s provocative song “Der Mussolini”, a literal dance instruction – "dance the Mussolini, dance the Adolf Hitler, dance the Jesus Christus..."
